Wider Opportunities

At New Silksworth Academy, we believe that it is important to develop a broad and balanced curriculum that includes but also goes beyond the National Curriculum for the pupils in our care so that we provide them with a range of experiences that empower them to be ambitious about their future as well as teaching them the skills that they need to succeed.

Our curriculum develops through evolving consultation with staff and pupils. This ensures that the pupils have increased opportunities to develop their interests and talents. Our New Silksworth Offer outlines the steps that we take within school and beyond to ensure that we are providing the best opportunities for the diverse interests of our children.

Each year we are visited by a pantomime and the whole school (including nursery) enjoy a Christmas performance of a traditional tale. This year we were treated to a fantastic rendition of 'Sleeping Beauty'

Children enjoy taking part in performances at all stages of their school life. Each phase in school puts on their own performance at Christmas and our Year 2 and Year 6 children both have an end of year show that it enjoyed by other pupils and the children’s parents. Here are some pictures from the ‘Pirates vs Mermaids’ show performed by our Year 2 pupils last year.

We believe that it is important to give children a breadth of experiences therefore we plan a range of different visits outside of school that allow children to broaden their experiences and enhance our school curriculum as well as our personal development curriculum. This includes sporting competitions, visits to Beamish, Roker beach, London, Weardale and more.

In school, children experience a range of different workshops such as nurse visits, university visitors, fire and rescue services, The British Red Cross, The Guide dog association as well as virtual experiences. Here are some pictures of children engaging in different workshops.

We celebrate national events. Last academic year, we celebrated the King's coronation by dressing up, making our own kites and flying them on the school yard.

We have a wide range of after school clubs that the children can access free of charge across the school.
